Alex R. Straus is chairman of the firm’s Civil Rights department and leads the firm’s California office. He has prosecuted civil rights cases on behalf of clients ranging from abused prisoners at Riker’s Island, the notoriously violent New York City prison, to former professional athletes racially profiled and assaulted on the streets of San Diego, California.
Mr. Straus has litigated cases throughout the country in both federal and state courts. He recently argued in front of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and authored an amicus curiae brief filed in the Supreme Court of the United States.
Born and raised in New York, Mr. Straus attended Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. As a law student, he was the 2009 recipient of the Kathleen Brit Memorial Prize for Alternative Dispute Resolution. He also served as law clerk for the NFL’s New England Patriots, working with the team’s General Counsel on real estate acquisitions, environmental compliance, and collective bargaining issues.
Mr. Straus has dedicated his professional life to the fight for justice and the preservation of civil rights, focusing on cases related to law enforcement excessive use of force, injury, and wrongful death while in custody.
